“I’ve worked in the voluntary sector for about 20 years now. I was inspired because I wanted to make a difference – it’s great to get up in the morning and do a job that will make a really positive difference to people’s lives.

I saw a Chief Executive role advertised for a very small charity called Bowel & Cancer Research and I thought I would like to find out what it was like in health and medical research. Health has a massive impact on overall wellbeing, and I was struck by how far we’ve come over the last few years because of advances in medical research. Bowel cancer and bowel disease affect an extraordinary number of people in the UK, yet very few people know about it.

I think that’s partly because people are embarrassed to talk about anything to do with their bowels, which is why raising awareness is so important. At Bowel & Cancer Research we are investing in the next generation of research experts through a dedicated PhD student programme, which the MCF is also supporting. Over the next five years we will see breakthroughs that are a direct result of the partnership between freemasonry and Bowel & Cancer Research. Medical research saves lives, it’s that simple.”

Deborah,

Chief Executive of Bowel & Cancer Research
